The history of Ellsworth Maine

According to the censes in 2010, the population in Ellsworth was over 7,000.  People from all over the U.S. and canada come to visit Ellsworth each year.  I just recently learned that the passamaquoddy tribe originally inhabited the Ellsworth area.  Ellsworth replaced Castine as the county seat of Hancock County in 1838.  The Maine Legislatur incorporated Ellsworth as a city in 1869.  In 1923, Ellsworth faced their first disaster, the Great Flood.  In 1933, Ellsworth faced yet another disaster, the Great Fire which destroyed most of Ellsworth's downtown commercial district.
